Illegal Character Editor

Access: Menu > Edit > Illegal Character Editor, <F10>, toolbar button, Options Panel edit button

Some text characters are not allowed by Windows to be used in a file name:

\ / : * ? " < > |

The presence of one or more of these characters in tag text used to rename a file will prevent the file from being renamed. The Illegal Character Editor can be used to tell the program in advance that you would like to automatically replace or remove specific illegal characters found, before the text is used to rename a file.

Illegal Character Editor

In the edit box below each of the nine illegal characters, type-in text to be used as a replacement (up to 3 characters max) when the program encounters the corresponding character in tag text it will use to auto-rename a file. To have an illegal character simply removed, enter a single asterisk (*) in the edit box instead. "Space" characters entered here appear in the editor as caret symbols (^) for clarity. In the example shown in the editor above, "backslashes" are to be replaced by a hyphen with a space on each side, while "question marks" are to be removed.

To enable illegal character replacement during renaming, check the "Enable illegal character replacement" checkbox. The status of this box is mirrored by the "Auto-replace illegals" checkbox on the Options Panel's Rename Tab (<Ctrl+O>), which can also be used to enable or disable the option.
