Discover without ICMP

By default, NetworkView requires that a node can be reached with a ping before looking for other sources of information (DNS, SNMP, Ports, WMI, NetBIOS). In this case, if you want to discover a node behind a firewall, it could not be detected.

You can modify this behavior by unchecking the "Ping required" checkbox in the Discovery Options, General:

  • NetworkView then always tries the other scan methods, and creates the node if one of these methods is successful.
  • The whole discovery process is consequently much longer, probably up to 10 times or more depending on the parameters you have chosen.
  • The physical presence of the node is not required. Since it can ask the DNS (and of course the Host and LMHost files), NetworkView will add the node for such a positive response.
  • This is a good way to populate a map without the nodes being active.
