Frequently Asked Questions
Where are my download projects saved?
By default, the WebCloner Setup will create a subfolder entitled "WebCloner websites" in your "Documents and Settings" folder, where download projects will be saved. You can change this default location anytime in Settings > Advanced > Directories.
A lot of files were not retrieved. What can I do to fix this?
When creating a new download project, select the "Enable Ignored List" option under the "More" button - WebCloner will save a list of all the files it skipped while downloading, along with the reason why the file was omitted (most often a too-restrictive filter set in the project Properties). Why are downloads stored in .web files and not directly on my HDD?
By maintaining a logical structure of each download project inside .web files, WebCloner is able to archive content, resume downloads, update downloads, convert links, search through downloads, or filter and export results. However, if you want to keep "clones" of the downloaded sites in folders on your HDD, you can use WebCloner's "Export To Folder" option.
How many websites can I download using WebCloner?
The number of websites you can download is limited only by your hard disk capacity.
Can I change the way WebCloner uses system resources?
Yes. Each project can be set up using Properties > Project > Threading & Resources. Lowering the value of the Process Priority and the Threads Number will make WebCloner use less bandwidth and system resources.
Can I download MacroMedia Flash files with WebCloner?
Yes, WebCloner 2.0+ supports Flash (.swf) files.
How can I avoid downloading large files?
You can use filters to specify the maximum or mimimum size of the files you want WebCloner to retrieve. Just enter the Properties window of a project and toggle the Minimum/Maximum Size values in the File Filters areas. Another way of avoiding large downloads: right-click any file in the Queue List while WebCloner is downloading and choose the "Skip" option.
I use the default settings, but some files are not downloaded!
The default download settings of WebCloner are merely a starting point designed to help beginners obtain satisfactory results with their downloads. By using these settings, you can usually download almost all content from regular sites, avoiding at the same time to download unnecessary, unrelated or extremely large files. More experienced users should set up WebCloner's advanced download filters to take full advantage of its power.
I lost downloaded content when closing a project!
You need to specifically save each project before closing it - otherwise the downloaded content will not remain stored on your hard drive.
Can I start a download project from my Internet Explorer browser?
Yes. Right click on a page in Internet Explorer to access WebCloner's contextual menu options: you can choose to download the entire page, all pages it links to or all images present in the page. A wizard will guide you through the rest of the download project settings.
Can I retrieve e-mail addresses from web pages?
Yes, using WebCloner Professional. Click the More button on the bottom left of the New Project window and make sure "Build Emails List" is selected. You will be able to export the list you obtain this way by choosing "Selected Project Objects" > "Emails" in WebCloner's Export Wizard.
